In this assignment animation there is the intention to incorporate the five theories of Edward Tufte. Argued as the preeminent authority on data and statistical visualisation (2004). He is responsible for, and the author for many books on the subject and his theories had a prominent effect on the design world. In this assignment the intention to enforce these rules set about by Edward Tufte will be achieved in a variety of ways. To emphasise the use of comparison and to show these in the piece, it could be a good idea to show the comparison of the post box in question, as it is being used and changed, compared with in the background some other post boxes that aren’t in use. This would be useful to show the audience a before and after of the design to emphasise the difference and significance of it. Using colours in the animation carefully as identifying pieces, as a way to convey information and narrative towards the audience. Different colours can be used to signify interactive mechanisms and guide the information towards the user. It is important at this stage to remember the significance of the content and product itself over the aesthetic style, the information that needs to be delivered should be a priority within this use. To deliver a narrative through space and time the animation will follow the journey of an item, in the storyboard it is portrayed as a lamp as it is being placed and used in the machinery, the audience will watch and follow it on its journey through being packaged, labelled and subsequently posted as the final result. This should achieve this narrative in a natural manner without too much manipulation or extra attention from the designer. To follow Edward Tuftes’ recommendation on layering it comes suggestive that incorporating multiple layers of information within the animation could help to achieve and enrich the viewers understanding of what is going on with the industrial design machine; making sure to focus and emphasise the design aspect of the piece. To try and achieve a macro focus, would be to try and reveal the underlying mechanisms behind the procedure being presented, by showing the inner workings and details within the journey of the package this could potentially be achieved, and by emphasising the finer details of the piece it could help to enhance the overall presenting of the machinery animation as a finality. Overall it will be difficult to achieve as an initial attempt but by embracing these rules and guidelines, a high quality final product could be delivered.
