Substance Stager

In this exercise it was tasked with “selling something in a box” the overall idea to be a continual improvement on the authors skills as they progress through the exercises. Themed around substance stager and product design the author took the overall assignment as a whole and worked out an overall idea of what the designs were going to feature. In this the idea of a brand to feature handyman tools sold to the user in a mystery box subscription fashion. The initial thought is to design a more high fashion toolset that would appeal to a “manly man” stereotype. To give a sense of legitimacy to the brand a logo designed around a woodland creature seemed appropriate, to enhance the idea of a legitimacy in brand and the knowledge that this hypothetical company has regarding tools and Do It Yourself (DIY) hobbies, it felt appropriate to take a theme related to that industry, so woodcutting was chosen. The logo became simple in nature by drawing a silhouette of a moose and incorporating the name of the company with it, by using a solid black design in this instance it provides a wood burned feel to the aesthetic. Placed on top the box which has been used with a different colour wood material on the lid and the base to provide an artistic and professional aesthetic. The purpose of this was to provide a high quality product to a particular audience of carpentry fans, tool experts and DIY hobbyists. A tagline of “tools so good you’ll never want to use them” was intended to be incorporated into the final design.
