“Virtual Reality (VR) devices are fast becoming a creativity tool that we can use to create 3D art” (XR Tech 2021)
As with the other technologies we have been discussing VR is also fast becoming more prominent in every day life. With the advancements it has taken over the years the possibilities are becoming almost endless. Bitner (2018) explains in his article how the different mediums of art are brought into a 3D digital world through the use of VR, claiming it as a productivity tool that is here to stay. Through multiple different software and systems available, a user is able to create digital art in VR, utilising classic equipment and practices through an entirely digital format. This feature of technology offers a whole new way to pursue the aesthetic desire. There are multiple applications available to the common user, with popular ones like Open Brush and Tilt Brush. “Open Brush allows the user to use a wide variety of brushes and tools to create 3D pictures and creations in a VR space” (Andrew Courtney N.D). Today there are multiple people exploring different facets of VR and pushing it to its limits of what is available. By exploring examples of different VR art designs it is easier to visualise the capabilities of software and hardware like this. VR in itself is a very intimate experience, the user blocks out most of their senses to immerse themselves in a digital world and experience something different to reality. There are some concerns that exist among VR art as a medium in a commercial setting. Initially the difficulty in acquiring the hardware, struggles to provide a robust and strong system to provide a comfortable experience for the user bring cost and maintenance factors into it. Then there is the worries of the tangability of VR art on a whole, with the resulting products being stored digitally, there can be concerns about ownership and copyright, which provide an anxious concern to many purveyors of this medium (Coates 2024)
In this task, we were instructed to group up and recreate an image from a film using a vr art software. Unfortunately due to some mental health reason I had missed the workshop in which we completed this. To compensate and give myself a chance at attempting the taks, I was fortunate enough to have access to a personal VR system in which to experiment with open brush software. In it I gave myself similar parameters as the original workshop and tried to recreate a scene using my digital art skills. I chose a recognisable scene from The Nightmare Before Christmas, as I felt it would be easy to adapt considering it was my first time using this software. Overall the process was exciting and entertaining to experiment with, it had a lot of features that provided an array of ways to put your creativity into the platform.
