Proposal
For my Emerging Technologies research proposal, I have considered multiple options to undertake, and after experiencing the different technologies in this module my final decision is to expand on an area that interests me outside of my studies. I enjoy storytelling and worldbuilding, so for my research project proposal I will be creating an interactive 360 narrative experience designed from the perspective of a company that aims to bring published works to life as a visual novel, or to be used in promotional materials for brands and Intellectual Properties (IP)
The Idea explored
In 1997 author Joanne Rowling had her novel ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ published, in it was a tale about a magical world of witches and wizards. As it grew in popularity, Rowling would go on to develop the story and release a series of novels. During 1998 Rowling released the second book in the series ‘Harry potter and the chamber of Secrets’. This novel expanded upon the world and introduced new ideas to the audience, one such idea being moving photos. ‘And a boy in my dormitory said if I develop the film in the right potion, the pictures’ll move.’ (Rowling, J.K 1999) appearing in a variety of formats these objects would be most notable throughout the series appearing as painted portraits of the world’s historical figures, and in newspaper photographs mostly. The idea behind these mostly insignificant world decoration pieces are part of the inspiration for the research project proposal I would like to discuss.
At the time of this novel’s release, the idea of moving images existed only in film and television, to have a wall plastered with moving portraits like such could only exist in fantasy or science fiction. Now in 2024 we have access to these once alien ideas in a variety of formats. With the introduction of the common day smart phone and expansion of our digital world, we are able to view multiple formats of moving images in a variety of ways. Although achieved in a different way, relying on technological advancements, we have the capacity to recreate limited versions of the ideas presented in this media. Advancements like streaming, Graphic Interchange Formats (GIFs), Social media and Gaming are changing the way that people consume media. Moving forward in a digital world, consumer expectations of media are being shaped by social media and content creators over the traditional film and television (TV) (Reuters Institute 2024). The move to a more obsessive consumption of media to bring it into a person’s identity is more prominent, with the ability to connect easier with others worldwide, the process of sharing and collaborating thoughts and process allows for a bigger mix of ideas and opinions. Tiktok™ is a key example of the change in consumption patterns of users, with its introduction to the market it has gained popularity from its delivery of bitesize content available to users that provides a short boost of dopamine through a satisfactory risk reward mechanic of swiping through an unknown algorithm of videos. In an article by Influencer Marketing Hub (2024) the platform boasts 1.6 billion users globally partly due to well executed marketing campaigns. It is hard to deny the impact this platform has had on the market, as other companies slowly followed suit into adapting similar content delivery such as Youtube™ Shorts, and Instagram™ Reels.
To expand on my proposal, it is important to understand that with the change of how we consume media, comes an opportunity to provide a new method of storytelling delivery. I would like to provide a sample scene of a narrative recreation of a story as an example of potential. I would design a 360 experience that is a recreation of an existing piece of literature or media and deliver a version that uses the technology discovered through this model that provides an interactive and narrative experience. The goal being for the user to experience a point of view story that would normally be able to experience through reading. I imagine it to be a hybrid between novel and film, with interactive storytelling to be the key aspect to the piece. WithinVR was a project that shut down in 2023, however there is still access to an archive of projects they released available on Youtube™ The channel’s title piece ‘A 360 preview of within’ explores different examples of the 360 capabilities in storytelling. An analysis of the video shows that there is reasonable capability to provide a satisfactory product as a final piece. There are moments where just being a 360 medium provides more weight to the content being viewed, as in the example of the march that was recorded. By being in the centre of the crowd and as a viewer being able to navigate around and see the sea of people around, it lends importance to the scene and achieves something that would normally take great vision and directing to achieve in a traditional piece. It can provide additional context to videos that would normally require exposition or other storytelling tricks to deliver. An example of how this can be used in storytelling as an adaptation from existing media lies with Jasmin Vardimons experience ‘Alice in VR Wonderland’ (2021) in this, the audience is invited to experience a retelling of that classic story reimagined through VR headsets that allows for a multi sensory experience that allows the audience to be up close and personal with the cast.
Now that there is an established potential desire for a delivery of this medium, there remains the discussion of the key objectives and potential challenges that may come through this proposal. Understanding the methodology and the reception around the target are only a section of the grand task. My goal is to deliver a final product which will expose the potential for a larger idea in the long run. These Visual Novels will be designed with the intention of becoming an alternative delivery method for users and enjoyers of traditional novels. Another path to consider is the potential usefulness as a tool these Visual Novels could provide to people who have conditions such as Aphantasia; which according to the Cleveland Clinic (N.D) means you can not picture things in your mind. Alongside this it could be used to assist people who struggle with reading traditional ways due to a lack of stimulus. It is important to understand the accessibility of this and how to approach that avenue in a reasonable and responsible way. By reminding ourselves to not exaggerate the difference but rather provide an alternative avenue for people to be able to enjoy the same media as others.
Before approaching the prototyping and initial design phase, it is important we discuss the considerations and restrictions that are to be put in place to ensure a high quality outcome is delivered. There are a number of Aims to achieve in the final product that we must strive for as the designer
These Aims will help us to deliver this high quality final product by providing us standards to strive for, to keep ourselves in check and to help us deliver on these aims we must take these considerations seriously
Storyboard
For the final Project i have decided to create a Visual Novel utilising 360 imaging software and tools to provide an interactive experience and a bringing to life retelling of a novel. For this proof of concept idea I will be using a chapter from a popular fantasy themed book Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (2005). The scene I will be utilising is near the beginning of the book, the protagonist, Percy, is on the run from a minotaur as he is trying to make his way through a forest to the safety of a camp. I believe this scene could provide enough action to keep a viewer occupied and interested, while also providing a perfect reason to show off the interactivity capabilities of the medium, through the delivery of a chase scene. It also shows a chance to experiment with sound and lighting choices, with it being set at night time during bad weather, there will be room to discover how to encapsulate the atmosphere of the moment. Through the use of sound design I will need to bring to life the emotion of the scene, while not distracting from what the final project is trying to be. I have storyboarded the process in which I believe the scene will take place. It begins with our camera pov and main character in the passenger seat of a car, being driven at speed towards an unknown destination. The air feels ominous and before long the car is struck by a huge creature. After veering off into the side of the road crashing into the trees, our character is forced to flee on foot through the forest, the chase scene heats up as we race through the forest with the beast closing in behind. The story leads the main character to perform a manoeuvre of wit to outsmart the beast and subdue it, an intense confrontation happens while the pov follows it intently, before the scene culminates with the hero arriving at their target destination safe and sound.
